Parasol handle in polished iron from the 1800 century

Previously, it was common to replace the top of one's parasol when it was worn down, instead of replacing it all. A beautifully decorated handle was therefore a necessity for any woman up to the 1920s.

This handle is made of iron that is polished.

The tradition of finer iron objects goes back to the beginning of the 19th century.
Here iron jewelery was used during religious mourning period. Their dark and black color matched the dimmed clothes you used, where normal jewelry in gold and silver were too flashy.

When the Prussian royal family in 1813 urged the nobility and citizenship to melt their gold and silver to collect money for the war against Napoleon, replacement jewelery was awarded with the text "Gold gab ich für Eisen" (I gave gold for iron).
Jewelery and articles of iron became a symbol of loyalty and national feeling.
